los angeles-based internet popstar, known mononymously  as dog, treats us to a nuanced, emotional sonic experience that feels simultaneously fresh and nostalgic. With production coming from Dog himself, supported by contributions from super-cool underground producers like florida-based hot tub jonny and Yardsale member noahmadethis.Monster takes us through a gallery of sounds that features grunge and pop-punk style guitar layers, combined with vibrant and futuristic synths, reminiscent of earlier projects from Dog like Popstar and Into the dogger-verse . Deep bass tones and sleek, dynamic drum loops lay the structure for melodies that reach cloud territory at times. Dog’s vocal narration guides us through Monster, which is a non-linear exploration of relationships, substances, and emotions. In these songs, Dog takes us down into the rabbit hole that is the life of an underground hollywood popstar; an introspection in the chaotic and extremely complex world of music in 2022.

In a lot of ways, Monster is also a self-portrait; perhaps exaggerated at times, this project explores the flaws and triumphs of its narrator, and through songs like the lead single within, which discusses the duality of human nature and the monster that lives inside all of us; an entity that we rarely let into view of the public eye. Tracks like “It’s Okay”, which features Houston-based artist and musician 33 Life, read lyrically like a one-sided conversation, perhaps even a contemplation with oneself.

All in all, Monster is a win. This full-length endeavor from the beloved Dog,is an introspective exploration of the monster within himself; an eclectic record that discusses mentality, the finality of death, and the stress and pressure of life and the world around us carefully packaged into a soundscape that is both futuristic and beautifully apocalyptic.
